Danao is a 5th class municipality in the province of Bohol, Philippines. The municipality is located 95 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital, Tagbilaran City and has approximate land area of 16,276 hectares. According to the 2007 census, it as a population of 17,716. And in the last 2010 National election, it has 9,9871 registered voters.

History

Danao was once the birthplace of the famed Boholano leader, Francisco Dagohoy, it was the place where he established his independent government and it also became a concentration camp for World War II prisoners during the Japanese occupation. It used to be a barrio of Talibon but it turned into a municipality by an Executive Order issued on March 16, 1961 by then Pres. Carlos P. Garcia. It was inaugurated as an independent municipality in July 9, 1961.[1]

Name

According to the Diccionario Español-Bisaya(1885), the following is the meaning of Danao = Lago, laguna, pantano, estanque grande, avenida, campañas, etc. (Lake, lagoon, freshet, large reservoir, arable land, field, etc.). Except that of a lake, all the other definitions of danao describer the municipality of Danao. The most like meaning of danao is freshet. Freshet means, 1). A sudden rise or overflow of a stream or river; 2) A freshwater stream emptying into the sea.

The Isumod River flowing near the town center of Danao will suddenly overflow and inundate a large portion of the town. The river joins the Wahig River and empties into the sea[2].
